Spiritual Abuse & Church Hurt Counseling

Spiritual Abuse & Church Hurt Counseling

Church should be a place where you are loved, cared for, and supported in your relationship with God. When the people you trusted to guide and care for you are also the people who hurt, silence, control, or betray you, the wound can be especially deep. You may still love God but no longer feel safe in church. You may question what happened, wonder whether you misunderstood, or struggle to separate what people did from who God is. You may not know whether to call it church hurt or spiritual abuse, but you know that something changed and the pain is still affecting you. Our counselors understand that when harm is connected to your faith, it can be difficult to know where to turn or who to trust. Counseling provides a place to talk honestly about what happened, ask questions, and begin understanding how the experience has affected you. Your counselor will take time to listen and respect where you are without telling you what you should believe or what your next step should be.

Complimentary consultation: 15 minutes with a counselor.

Who We Serve

  • Teens and adults who have been hurt, controlled, silenced, or betrayed within a church or faith community
  • Those questioning whether what they experienced was spiritual abuse or church hurt
  • People grieving the loss of a church, community, relationships, identity, or sense of belonging
  • Pastors, ministry leaders, missionaries, and family members affected by unhealthy leadership or church systems
  • Individuals who want a safe place to explore questions about God, faith, and church without pressure

What We Help With

  • Spiritual abuse, church hurt, betrayal, and religious trauma
  • Harm connected to the misuse of Scripture, spiritual authority, prayer, confession, obedience, or forgiveness
  • Shame, fear, confusion, grief, or self-doubt connected to faith experiences
  • Difficulty trusting yourself, others, spiritual leaders, churches, or God
  • Questions about faith, beliefs, identity, forgiveness, and whether to return to a faith community

How We Help

  • Help you identify and name harmful, abusive, or controlling spiritual experiences
  • Help you understand how those experiences may be affecting your faith, identity, relationships, and body today
  • Give you space to sort through messages or beliefs that may have been used to shame, frighten, or control you
  • Support you as you grieve what was lost and begin rebuilding trust in yourself and your choices
  • Move at your pace without pressuring you to forgive, reconcile, return to church, or reach a particular conclusion

A meaningful place to begin

Your questions have a place here.

When harm happens within a church or faith community, you may have been taught that asking questions was disrespectful, showed a lack of faith, or caused division. You may have learned to silence your concerns, doubt your own judgment, or take responsibility for harm that was not yours to carry.

Your counselor will take time to hear what happened and understand how it has affected you. Together, you can begin naming what was harmful, grieving what was lost, and sorting through what you believe now. You will not be rushed toward forgiveness, reconciliation, or returning to a faith community before you are ready.

A bright, calm room with comfortable chairs and natural light

Our approach

Your faith and your questions will be treated with care.

We understand that spiritual abuse can affect both your relationships with people and your understanding of God. Your counselor will not minimize what happened or pressure you toward a particular belief or outcome. Your counselor will take time to understand your experience, what you need now, and what you hope will change.

Your counselor will work with you to decide what would be most helpful moving forward. This may include identifying abusive or controlling patterns, working through painful experiences, understanding trauma responses, rebuilding trust in yourself, grieving losses, and developing healthier boundaries within relationships and faith communities.

Whether you hope to reconnect with faith, find a different way forward, or are still unsure, the goal is to help you name what happened, understand its impact, and begin healing. Your counselor will walk alongside you with respect for your choices and where you are in the process.
